Welcome to this week’s edition of Friday Reads! Today I am sharing a few quotes from This Tiny Perfect World by Lauren Gibaldi. I have not had much time for reading this week, so I haven’t read too much of this one yet.
Book Beginnings is a book meme hosted by Rose City Reader where participants share quotes (the first sentence, or so) of the book, along with initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires.
The Friday 56 is hosted by Freda’s Voice, and the rules are quite simple: Grab a book, any book, and turn to page 56 or 56% in your e-reader. Find any non-spoilery sentence(s) and post.
THIS WEEK’S BOOK:
Title: This Tiny Perfect World
Author: Lauren Gibaldi
Publisher: HarperTeen
Publication Date: February 27, 2018
Summary (from Goodreads):
The big-hearted story of a small-town girl who discovers how wide the world really is during one transformative summer. Perfect for fans of Susane Colasanti and Sarah Dessen.
Penny loves her small-town Florida life, and she has her future mapped out. She’s going to community college after graduation to stay close to home and her best friend, Faye. She’ll take over the family diner that her dad has been managing since her mother died. And one day, she’ll marry her high school sweetheart, Logan.
But when she unexpectedly lands a scholarship to a prestigious summer theater camp, she is thrust into a world of competition and self-doubt. And suddenly, her future gets a little hazy. As she meets new friends, including Chase, a talented young actor with big-city dreams, she begins to realize that maybe the life everyone (including her) expects her to lead is not the one she was meant to have.
From the acclaimed author of The Night We Said Yes and Autofocus.
THOUGHTS
I love books like this where the main character has to make life decisions. It will be interesting to discover how this one turns out. I have only read one other book by Lauren Gibaldi, The Night We Said Yes, and I really enjoyed it. Penny is definitely an interesting character and I think that this will be another fantastic story.
BOOK BEGINNING
I rest my head on Logan’s shoulder a we watch the first summer sunset. The Florida air is thick, hot like the sidewalk we’re sitting on, but that doesn’t keep us from staying outside.
FRIDAY 56
I look around and there are about twenty people here, mostly girls, more than likely all out for the same part as me. I look down at my script, then at them.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Lauren Gibaldi is a public librarian who’s been, among other things, a magazine editor, high school English teacher, bookseller, and circus aerialist (seriously). She has a BA in Literature and Master’s in Library and Information Studies. She lives in Orlando, Florida with her husband and daughter. Her books include THE NIGHT WE SAID YES, AUTOFOCUS, and the forthcoming THIS TINY PERFECT WORLD.I love dinosaurs, pasta, musicals, and cheesy jokes.
This sounds interesting. I too, like when the main character has to make life decisions. I like to see what way they go and why. I feel everything in life is a choice. A matter of yes or no. I like to see the characters make that choice.

I want to read this one so badly, and I have to admit that THAT COVER is a huge part of the draw. I mean, the book sounds fabulous, but that cover is one of the most beautiful I have seen in a long while!
I really appreciated Penny’s struggle with what she thought she wanted and what she thinks she might know. I think that will resonate with a lot of readers.

I feel really bad, but I am not interested in this book at all — and realized it was because of the cover. Definitely a minority opinion though, since it looks like everyone else really likes it.

This sounds like the kind of decision a lot of real girls have to make. It should be a good read!
