Books to movies adaptations in 2023 are releasing now and it is going to be an exciting year for books becoming movies. While we all know that the book is typically better than the movie, there is a lot to be excited for. Many of the book to movie adaptations are coming to streaming services in 2023 and it will make watching all of these upcoming films that much easier. The Selection by Kiera Cass – TBA – Netflix
Kiera Cass has been teasing fans for quite some time with adaptation news for her The Selection series books. The Selection movie is going to be available for streaming on Netflix. A release date is unclear, but it is rumoured to be coming to Netflix in 2023.
2. Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret by Judy Blume – April 28
For all the Judy Blume fans that have wanted a movie adaptation of Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, it is finally being realized. This middle grade book is a cult classic that has been a coming-of-age read for many. The cast is phenomenal and the early reviews are glowing.
3, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins – Nov. 17, 2023
This will be the fifth movie in the Hunger Games franchise. It is based on the prequel to The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins, This film was announced back in 2020 and it is most likely going to be one of the biggest hits of 2023.
4. Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson -June 30, 2023
One of the most beloved children’s stories is becoming a movie and I am super excited for it. This live action movie will be interesting, as the book is made up os Harold’s simple line drawings. It seems like it will be a loose adaptation of the book, but exciting none the less.
5. One True Loves by Taylor Jenkins Reid – April 14, 2023 – Prime Video
Taylor Jenkins Reid is one of the most popular authors right now and her books seem to make perfect adaptations. This book is a heart wrenching story about a woman whose husband returns after being missing for four years. It is definitely one to watch with a box of Kleenex nearby.
6. Nimona by N.D. Stevenson – TBA – Netflix
Netflix has been adapting some fantastic graphic novels and Nimona is one to watch for. The story is about a shapeshifter who is also a villain. I am sure this will be a super fun adaptation to stream when it is released.
7. The Last Thing He Told Me- April 14, 2023 – Apple TV+
This thriller is one of the Reese’s Book Club picks and it sounds really gripping. It is about a woman and her stepdaughter’s search for her missing husband. The book by Laura Dave is a NYT best seller and one that has many glowing reviews.
8. Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid – March 3 – Prime Video
Another amazing Taylor Jenkins Reid book is Daisy Jones and the Six. This is a perfect audiobook about a young woman coming of age in the late 1960s. It has a huge cast of characters that are all part of a rock band and it is one that will translate perfectly to the screen.
9. The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Anderson – May 26, 2023
This movie has been on many of my book to movie adaptation lists and it is finally coming out! I am really excited to see this live action Disney movie. It has a great cast and if the trailer is an indication of how good the film will be, we are in for a treat.
10. Salem’s Lot by Stephen King – TBA – HBO Max
This is not the first time that Salem’s Lot by Stephen King has been adapted. Many of King’s books make perfect horror films and it will be intriguing to find out how HBO adapts the story for the screen. There have been some production setbacks and release dates have been moved ahead, but it seems that it will be coming out sometime this year.
11. The Color Purple by Alice Walker – December 20, 2023
The Color Purple is a classic book written by Alice Walker that was adapted for film in 1985. Oprah Winfrey is coming out with a new book to movie adaptation that will transform this story into a musical. I am intrigued to find out how this will translate into a musical.
12. Uglies by Scott Westerfeld – TBA – Netflix
Uglies is a sci-fi series by Scott Westerfeld that has a dystopian setting. The books are really unique and have such a cool concept. This is one that I will be watching for in the coming months.
13. Turtles All the Way Down by John Green – TBA – HBO Max
I have always loved John Green’s books and Turtles All the Way Down is no exception. The main character has OCD and anxiety and the story is really enjoyable. The book is classic John Green with lots of humour and I have a feeling that the film will be just as enjoyable.
14. The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight Jennifer E. Smith – TBA – Netflix
This book by Jennifer E. Smith is a story that is all about fate. This will be a cute YA adaptation that will fit the bill for anyone who loves a romance film. There isn’t much information about the movie yet, but it is in post production now.
15. Love Again (Text for You) by Sofie Cramer – May 14, 2023
This is one book that sounds like it is super heart-breaking. The main character is coping with the loss of her fiancé and ends up texting with another man. Céline Dion stars and sings in this one, which has me super hyped for it.
16. Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus – TBA – Apple TV+
This historical fiction book is going to make for a great movie. The main character is a woman in the 1960s who is a brilliant scientist turned cooking show host. The story is feminist and thought-provoking with a sense of humour as well.
17. Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston – August 11 – Prime Video
This YA rom-com is one of my favourite books. It is a fun queer royal romance that is full of banter and emotions as well. It has no release date yet, but it will be going to Prime Video sometime in 2023.
18. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a #@%! by Mark Manson – Streaming
This cinematic documentary stars the author of the best-selling self-help book, Mark Manson. It is a really unique concept for a documentary and I am intrigued to watch it. It is available to watch on many streaming platforms, such as Apple TV+ and Prime Video.
19. Tiny Beautiful Things by Cheryl Strayed – April 7, 2023 – Hulu
This book sounds so relatable and heartwarming. It is another Reese Book Club pick that is a popular non-fiction title that is a collection of essays from Cheryl Strayed’s advice column. The series will be on Hulu in eight episodes.
20. The Magician’s Elephant by Kate DiCamillo – March 10, 2023 – Netflix
This middle grade novel is a touching story about a boy who is seeking his sister. It has themes of hope and family and is one that is enjoyable at any age. This computer-animated movie looks like it is going to be a magical adaptation.
There are so many book to movie adaptations releasing in 2023. It is going to be a busy season of reading all the books becoming movies in 2023. Which of these movie adaptations in 2023 are you most excited for?
