Review: The Wrath & the Dawn by Renée Ahdieh

❀ A Fantastic Retelling

The Wrath & the Dawn is one of the best retellings I’ve ever read! It loosely follows the plot of One Thousand and One Nights, but is its own story with twists and turns that will confuse and enlighten the reader. The main character, Shahrzad, is determined to stay alive for more than one night, so she tells her captor/husband a different story each night that is incomplete. The stories that Shahrzad tells are the same as the ones in the original One Thousand and One Nights, which will give the reader a sense of familiarity, only to have it shattered with plot twists.

❀ Descriptive Writing

Renée Ahdieh has such a beautiful writing style. Her descriptions are so ravishing that the reader will be able to picture the whole story with ease. Each outfit, each meal and each hallway in the palace is so detailed that words can’t describe how incredibly written The Wrath and the Dawn is! To experience this amazing feeling, you will have to read this book for yourself.

❀ A Diverse Read

The Wrath & the Dawn by Renée Ahdieh is a very diverse book. It has an exotic Saudi Arabia-like setting and the characters are Arabian as well. I really appreciate the fact that the author has created such a diverse book, because there aren’t enough books like this one in the young adult fantasy genre. This book is a refreshing change from the typical YA book!
