Review: Open Road Summer by Emery Lord

Open Road Summer by Emery Lord features two of my favourite things to read about: music and road trips. This book is about two best friends on tour and stars a main character who is likeable and learns from her mistakes. The strong female friendship really sold this one for me. I regret waiting so long to read this book!

Summary (from Goodreads):

After breaking up with her bad-news boyfriend, Reagan O’Neill is ready to leave her rebellious ways behind. . . and her best friend, country superstar Lilah Montgomery, is nursing a broken heart of her own.

Fortunately, Lilah’s 24-city tour is about to kick off, offering a perfect opportunity for a girls-only summer of break-up ballads and healing hearts. But when Matt Finch joins the tour as its opening act, his boy-next-door charm proves difficult for Reagan to resist, despite her vow to live a drama-free existence.

This summer, Reagan and Lilah will navigate the ups and downs of fame and friendship as they come to see that giving your heart to the right person is always a risk worth taking.

A fresh new voice in contemporary romance, Emery Lord’s gorgeous writing hits all the right notes.

Review: Open ROad Summer by Emery Lord

❀ Road Trip Book

The book tells the story of a country singer’s best friend who ends up joining the summer tour. I love any book about music and any book about road trips, so I was excited to see that this book has both. There are some very interesting behind the scenes aspects of performing in the book, and I especially enjoyed the songwriting. Fans of country music, or fans of summer road trips, will definitely enjoy this one.

❀ Flawed and Authentic Main Character

I really enjoyed Reagan’s character in the story. She is flawed, and I didn’t agree with some of her choices, but she is so loyal to her best friend. What I liked about Reagan is the fact that she is aware of her flaws and willing to change. She also doesn’t ditch her friend once she gets a boyfriend, which is something that I always like to see. Overall, Reagan is a dimensional character with an authentic voice.

❀ Strong Female Friendship

My favourite aspect of the story has to be the strong female friendship. Dee and Reagan are so supportive of each other no matter what, and while they are opposites, they are so close. I loved how Dee doesn’t ignore Reagan once she gets famous and how they are always the main priority for each other. As well, there is no love triangle once a boy joins the tour, which I appreciate. The girls never fight over him, which I prepared to see. Honestly, I enjoyed reading about friendship more than romance, and I was glad to see that this book did it right.

❀ Cute and Quick

Open Road Summer by Emert Lord is a book about road trips and music that features a flawed main character. I especially enjoyed the female friendship. If you are looking for a cute and quick read, I would highly recommend this one.

Great review, Olivia! I like that there’s a strong female friendship in this book because in most books that’s not always the case and it’s really too bad. Also I have a thing with books featuring country music in any way so I’m really liking the sound of this story. It sounds amazing!
