Summary (from Goodreads):

When Rachelle was fifteen she was good—apprenticed to her aunt and in training to protect her village from dark magic. But she was also reckless— straying from the forest path in search of a way to free her world from the threat of eternal darkness. After an illicit meeting goes dreadfully wrong, Rachelle is forced to make a terrible choice that binds her to the very evil she had hoped to defeat.

Three years later, Rachelle has given her life to serving the realm, fighting deadly creatures in an effort to atone. When the king orders her to guard his son Armand—the man she hates most—Rachelle forces Armand to help her find the legendary sword that might save their world. As the two become unexpected allies, they uncover far-reaching conspiracies, hidden magic, and a love that may be their undoing. In a palace built on unbelievable wealth and dangerous secrets, can Rachelle discover the truth and stop the fall of endless night?

Inspired by the classic fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood, Crimson Bound is an exhilarating tale of darkness, love, and redemption.

(This is a standalone novel, not part of the Cruel Beauty Universe.)

Review: Crimson Bound by Rosamund Hodge

❀ Little Red Riding Hood Retelling

Crimson Bound is a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood with a dark twist. It is not based on the classic fairy tale versions by The Brothers Grimm or Charles Perrault that you are probably familiar with. Instead, Rosamund Hodge was inspired by other works that readers may not be aware of. The Story of Grandmother and The Girl With No Hands influenced Hodge’s Crimson Bound.

❀ A Gripping Adventure

In a similar vein to Little Red Riding Hood, Crimson Bound sets off on a journey through the woods. Rachelle, the protagonist, winds up getting lost in the forest, however, the jaunt is completely different! This is not a simple quest to find grandmother’s house, it is a gripping adventure to find the Joyeuse sword and defeat the Devourer. Readers will be intensely turning the pages to find out what happens next.

❀ Fantasy Elements

Crimson Bound by Rosamund Hodge has many elements that make an epic fantasy novel: a palace, a forest and lots of magic. Crimson Bound by Rosamund Hodge is one of those books that fans of the YA fantasy genre will be eager to read. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed Little Red Riding Hood and Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. Readers will find this fantasy novel hard to put down!
