A Girl Like That by Tanaz Bhathena

A Girl Like That by Tanaz Bhathena  sounds so original! It is so interesting how the story starts off with the main characters’ deaths and tells the story leading up to it from others’ points of view. Zarin also seems like a complex main character and one who is super tough. I haven’t actually read too many books set in Saudi Arabia, so I am excited to be transported there in this book. I can’t wait until this winter to pick up this book.

Summary (from Goodreads):

A timeless exploration of high-stakes romance, self-discovery, and the lengths we go to love and be loved.

Sixteen-year-old Zarin Wadia is many things: a bright and vivacious student, an orphan, a risk taker. She’s also the kind of girl that parents warn their kids to stay away from: a troublemaker whose many romances are the subject of endless gossip at school.  You don't want to get involved with a girl like that, they say. So how is it that eighteen-year-old Porus Dumasia has only ever had eyes for her? And how did Zarin and Porus end up dead in a car together, crashed on the side of a highway in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia? When the religious police arrive on the scene, everything everyone thought they knew about Zarin is questioned. And as her story is pieced together, told through multiple perspectives, it becomes clear that she was far more than just a girl like that.

It is strange, I thought, how we always recognize our best memories in hindsight.

I have this on my TBR too. I am trying to find more books with non-western settings, and this one sounds like it will be packed with feels as it tackles so major issues.

I like the idea of the story being told when the characters aren’t alive to tell it. This sounds interesting. I hadn’t seen the title or the cover, so I am interested in this one for sure!
