2019 YA Book to Movie Adaptations
2019 YA book to movie adaptations seem to be popping up all over the place! Every time I turn around there is another book that has been optioned for a movie or series. This excites me so much because I am a sucker for these kinds of movies. I am always curious to find out if the movie is just as good as the book. Below are a few 2019 YA book to movie adaptations that I am looking forward to seeing on the screen this year.
Ashes in the Snow- Releases January 11, 2019
I listened to the audiobook for Ruta Sepetys’ Between Shades of Gray (original title of the book) recently and I can’t wait to see this adaptation. The book really exposed so much about the Soviet invasion of Russia. This historical fiction had me in tears and I am sure the film is going to do the same.
Anthem of a Teenage Prophet- Releases January 11, 2019
This one is new to me and it sounds like it will be quite funny. The book is entitled Anthem of a Reluctant Prophet and it is all about a teenager who predicts his friend’s death. I am not sure that I will have time to read the novel, but I may give the film a try.
Chaos Walking- Releases March 1, 2019
I haven’t read Patrick Ness’ Chaos Walking Trilogy, but there are so many glowing reviews on Goodreads, I am definitely going to give it a try. This sci-fi series is about a place that has no females and you can hear everyone’s thoughts. My mind is already blown!
Five Feet Apart- Releases March 22, 2019
Five Feet Apart by Rachael Lippincott is a novel about a teen with Cystic Fibrosis. I found this book to be quite enjoyable and the details concerning the disease are very educational. This is one that I am highly anticipating this spring.
After- Releases April 12, 2019
The After series by Anna Todd is a YA contemporary romance set in Washington. After first started as a Wattpad story before being published by Gallery Books. If you are a fan of One Direction and fanfiction, this might be one for you!
The Sun is Also a Star- Releases May 17, 2019
The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon was one of my favourite reads of 2016. This book is all about fate and takes place over the course of one day. I highly recommend giving it a try before seeing the film.
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark- Releases August 9, 2019
Somehow I have not read Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz. This is technically a middle grade series, but it sounds like it is actually quite scary. I am always excited to read these types of books before Halloween, and the movie is coming out just before fall, so you know I will be adding this to my read/watch list!
Little Women- Releases September 28, 2019
When I first saw that this film was coming out again, I admit to rolling my eyes. I still love the original movie. However, this adaptation of the classic novel Little Women by Louisa May Alcott is a modern take on the story. I am intrigued to see how this one compares to the others.
The Goldfinch- Releases October 11, 2019
The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt is a literary fiction novel that won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. It sounds like a YA-crossover to me, as the main character is 13 years old when he survives an accident. There are some conflicting reviews on Goodreads for this one, but the fact that it won the Pulitzer has me intrigued to find out more.
Cats- Releases December 20, 2019
I know, this one might be a bit of a stretch. I have to include Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot. First of all, it is about cats. Secondly, I am a huge fan of the musical Cats. I am also a self-professed Swiftie, so I will be jumping at the chance to see this one when it is released.
Books to Movies 2019
There are some other 2019 YA book to movie adaptations to be released that still have no release dates. Some to watch for are Dr. Bird’s Advice for Sad Poets, Stargirl, P.S. I Still Love You, and All the Bright Places. What 2019 YA book to movie adaptations are you most excited to see this year?
I haven’t read Five Feet Apart, but I really like Cole Sprouse, so I might need to see that one. I haven’t heard of the book Anthem of a Reluctant Prophet, but I’m super curious about it now!!! I still need to read Between Shades of Gray, but I will and I will see the movie!

I hope that you enjoy them! Between Shades of Gray is a wonderful read. Depressing, but very insightful. 🙂
I am very excited for. The chos walking movie. I have only read the first book and loved it. Another series I need to restart and finish. Good time to do it.

I am really excited to read this series! It has such a fascinating concept and is so highly rated. I hope that we both enjoy the books and the film. 🙂
Chaos Walking, The Sun is also a Star and Reluctant Prophet are all going on my TBR thanks to you!
Yay!! I hope that you enjoy them!! 🙂
OMG the Sun is Also a Star is coming to the big screen??? I’m so excited!!!
Right?! It is going to be a fantastic year for movies. 🙂
I had no idea that a Ruta Sepetys book was becoming a movie, that’s so exciting! I liked Between Shades Of Grey and I can’t wait to see how it turns out on the big screen! I also can’t wait for The Sun is Also A Star! I haven’t read Five Feet Apart yet, I should prioritize it on my TBR list to read in time for the movie.☺️
I am trying to rearrange my TBR as we speak! I hope that we both love the films as much as the books. 🙂
I honestly have no idea how they’re going to make After work. I guess I’ll have to see it for myself. I wasn’t a big fan of the series. I thought Tessa was emotionally abused by Hardin all of the time.
I haven’t read the After series. It does sound like it might be a bit cringe worthy and the abuse aspect is not okay if it isn’t addressed properly. I would love to know what you think of the film if you do watch it. 🙂
oooh thanks for the list! I will have to share this with my daughter. She loves to read books then watch the movies.

A girl after my own heart! I hope that she enjoys the ones that she chooses to watch and read. 🙂
These are pretty much all new to me, but I’m always up for a good adaptation!
Me too! I am hoping that a few of these are winners. 🙂
Several of these are on my to read list. I’m excited for all of the book to movie releases coming out this year!

Same!! There are so many to choose from! 🙂
Thank you for this post!!!!!!!!!!!! I now know what I will go to the movie 🙂
Ha! I hope that you enjoy the ones you see! 🙂
I haven’t read a lot of these! But I had been planning on reading The Sun is Also a Star someday! I didn’t know it was being made into a film though. I’ll have to be sure to read it this year. And I’m excited for Goldfinch especially and Anthem of a Teenage Prophet sounds really funny. But also dark. Will have to keep a lookout for that one! Awesome post 😀
I hope that we both enjoy these! The Sun is Also a Star is one that I am highly anticipating. 🙂
Hopefully there’s more news on the DR BIRD movie coming soon. It’s finished. They are looking for a distributor now. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Wooohoo! That is really exciting news! 🙂
I’m very excited for these! I am also a fan of watching book-to-movie adaptations to see how they execute a whole book into a two-hour film (although I’m not a fan of those adaptations that were so bad). Fantastic post! And do forgive me for binge-commenting on your posts, I just find them so interesting.
