You’ve Reached Sam by Dustin Thao is a heartbreaking story about learning to let go. Following a girl who is given the opportunity to communicate with her dead boyfriend through phone calls, this one promises plenty of tears. The concept is original, but I was a little underwhelmed by the underdeveloped characters and repetitive writing style. While the book is missing the emotional punch I was expecting, I still found the philosophical implications interesting and would recommend it to those looking for a unique story about grief. This one combines ballet and babysitting as the main character spends the holidays babysitting her favourite clients at a ski resort. The characters are lovable, and the descriptions of winter activities throughout the book make for a cosy reading experience. The Gilded Cage by Lynette Noni is an addictive fantasy with secret scheming and shocking plot twists. Set soon after the events of The Prison Healer, this one is a little calmer and takes the time to explore the main character’s shifting allegiances. While this book is a sequel, it is just as thrilling as the first book, and I loved getting to explore the world outside the prison. This is a tense and original series that I can’t recommend enough.
