Harrow Lake by Kat Ellis is a gripping horror novel that is perfect for Halloween. While it is out of my comfort zone as a fan of contemporary, I enjoyed the suspenseful plot and unreliable narrator. The writing is also incredibly atmospheric, which made this a difficult book to put down. This is the perfect read for those looking for an immersive and memorable psychological thriller.

All of Us Villains by Amanda Foody and Christine Lynn Herman is a high-stakes fantasy that puts a unique twist on the concept of the tournament to the death. Depicting a competition where players fight through curses, this one contains morally grey characters and a well developed magic system. You’ve Reached Sam by Dustin Thao is a heartbreaking story about learning to let go. Following a girl who is given the opportunity to communicate with her dead boyfriend through phone calls, this one promises plenty of tears. The concept is original, but I was a little underwhelmed by the underdeveloped characters and repetitive writing style. While the book is missing the emotional punch I was expecting, I still found the philosophical implications interesting and would recommend it to those looking for a unique story about grief. You Can Go Your Own Way by Eric Smith is an original story about growth and second chances. Centred around a pinball arcade, this one contains social media battles and two narrators. While I had some issues with the story’s slow pacing, this is still a heartwarming read that would be perfect to cozy up with this winter. Continue reading
