The Project by Courtney Summers is pretty far out of my comfort zone, but I always seem to love how Summers writes a thriller. This is a dark read, one about emotional manipulation and how cults prey on vulnerability. The characters are incredibly complex, and the writing style provides an immersive reading experience. Jack Kerouac is Dead to Me by Gae Polisner is a book that explores coming of age with a parent who has mental health issues. The main character is interesting, although not very likeable. Only Mostly Devastated by Sophie Gonzales is a book I had been highly anticipating since it is being described as Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda meets Clueless with inspiration from Grease. I enjoyed the mix of fun and seriousness in the book, although the plot is not overly unique, and the characters are all so complex. There is also a theme of family, which I always love in a book. Ultimately, this is a great book for those looking for a more meaningful contemporary that will also deliver laughter. Continue reading
Diamond City by Francesca Flores is a book I had been anticipating due to its supposed action and dark magic. The premise interested me, and I enjoyed the idea of an assassination gone wrong and some unlikely allies. Despite this, many elements of the story are quite flat, including the main character and the setting, and I was ultimately unimpressed. Continue reading
You’d Be Mine by Erin Hahn is a hard-hitting contemporary that digs deep into many issues. It has the perfect balance of romance and drama. The characters are realistic and the country music summer tour backdrop make it a perfect addition to a summer TBR. Continue reading
