Up All Night: 13 Stories Between Sunset and Sunrise by Laura Silverman (editor) is an exciting collection of short stories that all take place between sunset and sunrise. This open-ended prompt leaves room for many unique interpretations, and I was impressed with the wide range of stories within the anthology as well as its diversity. Furia by Yamile Saied Méndez is a feminist story about soccer and following your dreams no matter what. As a fan of any book about sports, I loved reading about Camila’s dreams of becoming a professional soccer player in the face of misogyny, and she is a strong main character with an engaging voice. While the author does not shy away from the more painful aspects of a patriarchal society, this is a story full of hope, and I would definitely recommend it to those who, like me, enjoy representation of strong women in sports. Bright Burning Stars by A.K. Small is a book that tells the story of a fierce competition at a school for ballet, and it does not shy away from any details. The novel is pretty dark, but I was intrigued by the characters’ dilemmas and determination to win. This is a realistic story with developed characters and eloquent writing. Continue reading
