Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco is the perfect festive read for Halloween. It is is a little bit out of my comfort zone since I don’t typically read scary books, but I found myself loving the thrilling plot and the intelligent main character. The Paris Secret by Lily Graham is an epic story set during World War II. It tells the tale of how Valerie discovers the truth about her heritage through the use of alternating timelines. My Lady’s Choosing by Kitty Curran and Larissa Zageris is an historical romance that is a humorous and engaging book of stories that allows the reader to decide the path of the book. No Saints in Kansas by Amy Brashear fictionalizes how the teens in Holcomb reacted to the tragic events of the time. While it may seem like an interesting concept to focus on the teen perspective of the notorious Clutter family murders, No Saints in Kansas is an inadequate historical fiction novel that has an unrelatable main character, and is a true story that is better left alone. You Bring the Distant Near by Mitali Perkins is a beautifully written saga that tells the story of the Das family and their experiences immigrating to the United States. When a book grabs hold of you and keeps you engaged right up to the end, it is safe to say that it is going to be a favourite. Told in alternating perspectives, Perkins gives her readers so many unique and interesting points of view through her well-developed female characters. The Indian customs and culture that are told throughout this story are so insightful and add to the magic of the narrative. Continue reading
