Somebody That I Used to Know by Dana Davis is a heartfelt read about second chances. Following ex-best friends who reunite, this one contains a childhood bucket list, plenty of descriptions of music, and two main characters who transform throughout the story. While I thought that some of the dialogue feels a bit outdated, this is still an entertaining read, and fans of realistic contemporaries with complex relationships will enjoy this one. Review: Tahira in Bloom by Farah Heron
Tahira in Bloom by Farah Heron is a story about fashion and flowers that will leave readers with a smile. As a fan of both of these forms of design, I loved reading about Tahira’s summer in the flower capital of Ontario, and she is a strong and confident main character as well. Balancing humour and heartfelt moments with more serious topics, this is a charming contemporary that I would definitely recommend. Continue reading
Fifteen Hundred Miles from the Sun, Jonny Garza Villa
Fifteen Hundred Miles from the Sun by Jonny Garza Villa broke my heart, then put it back together. Following a boy who accidentally comes out online, then finds himself in a relationship with his Twitter crush, this one contains both hard-hitting and heartwarming scenes. I especially enjoyed the realistic characters and their connection. Despite my enjoyment of Jules and Mat, I found the writing very dialogue-heavy, and I would have liked to see more descriptions throughout the book. However, this is still such an important read that I’m sure will touch many. Continue reading
