Out of the Blue by Jason June is a charming story about merfolk and the meaning of home. I always love a good fish out of water story–literally in this case–and as the book follows one mer’s journey to land, it contains two realistic main characters and the fake dating trope. Happily Ever Island by Crystal Cestari is an inventive story about a spring break trip to Disney’s newest resort. I loved reading about the characters becoming a Disney character of their choice, and both of the main characters are relatable. The activities at the resort are described in detail, which makes Happily Ever Island jump off the page. Full of Disney references and magic, this is the perfect read for any Disney fan. Set in a Dollywood-inspired theme park, I was charmed by the unique setting, complicated family history, and contrasting main characters that this one contains. My Mechanical Romance by Alexene Farol Follmuth is the robot-building YA romance novel I have been waiting for. Spotlighting women in STEM, I loved the main character’s transformation throughout the book as she begins to view herself as having a place on the team and in the field, and her experiences are realistic. The author also draws attention to the difficulties women face in these male-dominated spaces, which provides great balance to the romance at the story’s centre. This is a cute and empowering read that I’m sure will resonate with many. Continue reading
