Bookish characters who love to read books are some of my favourite characters of all time. There are so many bookworm characters to love from literature and screen. I am sure you will recognize many of these famous bookish characters and maybe you will find some new ones to add to your list to check out. Here’s my favourite characters from books. I hope that you love them all, too!

1. Hermione Granger

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling

Hermione Granger is without a doubt one of the most famous bookworm of recent years. This amazing female bookish character uses her knowledge from books to help her and her friends throughout the Harry Potter series.


2. Matilda

Matilda by Roald Dahl

Matilda is a favourite childhood character who loves reading books from the Roald Dahl novel, Matilda. She is a whip smart character who must keep her fondness of books and reading a secret from her abusive family. It is a book that definitely champions good over evil and this bookworm is one to root for.


3. Elizabeth Bennet

Pride And Prejudice by Jane Austen

Elizabeth Bennet from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is a book lover who loves to read. Her character is so intelligent and inspiring. She is definitely a blueprint for the many bookish characters who came after her.


4. Rory Gilmore

Rory Gilmore is a book lover character that has been a fan favourite since the Gilmore Girls series began airing in 2003. Rory is a quirky character who is book smart and relatable. Her bookish character is one that has been used many times over to create memes about loving books.

Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery

Anne Shirley has to be one of my all time favourite bookworms. The Anne of Green Gables series is an old fashioned story, but it is just so humorous. Anne gets herself into so much trouble, but her genuineness and kindness always win. Her love of reading is really contagious.

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

Jo March from Little Women is an aspiring author who is determined to break societal norms. She is so loveable and her desire to put her family first is so admirable. Jo is a classic bookish character that has been loved for generations.


7. Liesel Merminger

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

Liesel Merminger is a book loving character from Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief. It is Liesel’s love of literature that drives her to steal books from the wealthy during WWII. She is an interesting protagonist and her connections to books is the driving force of the story.


8. Tyrion Lannister

A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin

Tyrion Lannister from A Game of Thrones is a book lover that uses books and intelligence as a weapon. He is an admirable character in this world. He faces a lot of prejudice and the knowledge he obtains through reading is inspirational.


9. Francie Nolan

A Tree Grows In Brooklyn by Betty Smith

Francie Nolan from A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is a bookworm who has a lot of hardships. She is a young girl who uses books to escape the realities of life. Definitely a very relatable coming of age story.


10. Lisa Simpson

Lisa Simpson from The Simpsons is a bookish character from T.V. that has provided lots of laughs to so many. With a father like Homer, it is hard to know why, but she is the smart one in her family. Her passion for books and reading helps to fuel her beliefs and makes her an enjoyable character to watch.


11. Daria Morgendorffer

Daria Morgendorffer from the T.V. series Daria is an enjoyable book loving character to watch. A cynic at heart, she loves to read and often has something witty to say. If you enjoy an intelligent bookish character in a T.V. series, Daria is one to look for.


12. Jess Mariano

Jess Mariano is another character from the hit T.V. series, Gilmore Girls. Jess is one of Rory’s boyfriends from the show. While he is depicted as a bad boy, he is a book lover at heart. This love for books is what sparks the attraction these two characters have for one another.


13. Scout Finch

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Scout Finch is a fantastic bookish character who loves to read from To Kill a MockingbirdHer father, Atticus, instills a love of literature in her in the novel. It is through books that she makes sense of the world around in her in this bildungsroman.


14. Klaus Baudelaire

The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket

Klaus Baudelaire is a bookworm from A Series of Unfortunate Events. He is a speed reader and a walking dictionary. Klaus is without a doubt the one Baudelaire with all of the answers.


15. Nora and Charlie from Book Lovers

Book Lovers by Emily Henry

Nora and Charlie from Book Lovers by Emily Henry are the ultimate bookworm couple. Nora is a literary agent, while Charlie is an editor. The two find themselves in a small town one summer and end up falling in love. If you enjoy a book with a bookish romance , this is one to try.
