The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon is one of the few books that I was able to develop an attachment to. This book is set over one day and really focuses on destiny. The two main characters are both so unique and even the side characters are developed so well. I would consider this a must-read!

Summary (from Goodreads):

Natasha: I’m a girl who believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. I’m definitely not the kind of girl who meets a cute boy on a crowded New York City street and falls in love with him. Not when my family is twelve hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won’t be my story.

Daniel: I’ve always been the good son, the good student, living up to my parents’ high expectations. Never the poet. Or the dreamer. But when I see her, I forget about all that. Something about Natasha makes me think that fate has something much more extraordinary in store—for both of us.

The Universe: Every moment in our lives has brought us to this single moment. A million futures lie before us. Which one will come true?

Book Review: The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon

This book is an inspiring story all about fate. Daniel and Natasha meet on the streets of New York the day Natasha is supposed to be deported. Using the 36 questions that lead to love, Daniel attempts to get Natasha to fall in love with him using science. I loved how the entire book took place over the course of one day. It shows how fast love and friendship can develop and really emphasizes the theme of destiny. This reminded me a little bit of Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares, which I also really enjoyed.

❀ Interesting Characters

Natasha and Daniel are both such interesting characters with different ambitions. Natasha is very logical and uses science to her advantage. On the other hand, Daniel is a poet who rejects his dad’s ideas for his future. The character development is so strong in this book, even for the minor characters. By the end of the story I developed a true attachment to Daniel and Natasha and felt like they were real people.

❀ Amazing Writing

Nicola Yoon has such an amazing writing style. She is able to write about the serious topic of deportation while adding many humorous scenes in between. One of my favourite things about The Sun is Also a Star is how there are these little interludes offering backstory throughout the book. For almost every side character, there is a short chapter following their scene explaining how they feel and why they act the way they do. This was such a clever idea that I would definitely like to see more often!

❀ A Book About Destiny

The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon is a romance book about destiny that takes place over one day. The main characters are so well developed and the side characters each have little backstory chapters. This is such an amazing book that I would definitely recommend to everyone!
