Today’s Teaser Tuesday: To Capture What We Cannot Keep

Author: Beatrice Colin
Publisher: Flatiron Books
Publication Date: November 29, 2016

Set against the construction of the Eiffel Tower, this novel charts the relationship between a young widow and an engineer who, despite constraints of class and wealth, fall in love.
In February 1887, Caitriona Wallace and Émile Nouguier meet in a hot air balloon, floating high above Paris--a moment of pure possibility. But back on firm ground, their vastly different social strata become clear. Cait is a widow who because of her precarious financial situation is forced to chaperone two wealthy Scottish charges. Émile is expected to take on the bourgeois stability of his family's business and choose a suitable wife. As the Eiffel Tower rises, a marvel of steel and air and light, the subject of extreme controversy and a symbol of the future, Cait and Émile must decide what their love is worth.
Seamlessly weaving historical detail and vivid invention, Beatrice Colin evokes the revolutionary time in which Cait and Émile live--one of corsets and secret trysts, duels and Bohemian independence, strict tradition and Impressionist experimentation. To Capture What We Cannot Keep, stylish, provocative, and shimmering, raises probing questions about a woman's place in that world, the overarching reach of class distinctions, and the sacrifices love requires of us all.

Something about this one caught my eye when I saw it on NetGalley and I knew that I just had to request it. I do not read much historical fiction, but the setting of Paris and the era before the Eiffel Tower was erected has me enamoured. This one is a bit slower paced, but very beautifully written.
Book Quotes: To Capture What We Cannot Keep
The hot-air balloon had reached the end of its chain and came to a sudden, jolting halt. She opened her eyes. The brazier roared, the balloon still floated in the air, the world was as she left it; Paris below and the sky above.
STOP, you’re freaking me out. At least wait until I’ve had my coffee. Sounds marvelous, but I don’t think I would ever get in a hot air balloon!

Hahaha! I am not sure that I could ever go up in a balloon either! 😉
Great teaser. I hope you are enjoying the story. This week my teaser comes from Bay of Sighs by Nora Roberts. Happy reading!
I’m not usually a fan of historical fiction either but I do love the sound of this. Can’t wait to hear what your final verdict is.
Ha ha! This was my book today too!
That’s hilarious! 🙂
I’ve been reading quite a bit of historical fiction lately and enjoying it. The Paris setting appeals to me too. Sounds like a book I’d enjoy.
My Tuesday post features A MAN CALLED OVE.
This setting definitely grabs me every time! 🙂
I keep meaning to get back into this genre. I can’t get enough of the movies. Must fix that!
My TT from One
I am a huge fan of historical movies! This one reminds me of a mini-series that I watched about the construction of The Titanic. I suppose it has the same type of vibe. 😉
Way too historical fiction, with too large a side of romance for me. But that cover sure is pretty!
