Teaser Tuesdays: The Last Boy and Girl in the World

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Books and a Beat. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Today’s Teaser Tuesday: The Last Boy and Girl in the World

The Last Boy and Girl in the World by Siobhan Vivian.Title: The Last Boy and Girl in the World
Author: Siobhan Vivian
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers
Publication Date: April 26, 2016

Summary (from Goodreads):

What if your town was sliding underwater and everyone was ordered to pack up and leave? How would you and your friends spend your last days together?

While the adults plan for the future, box up their possessions, and find new places to live, Keeley Hewitt and her friends decide to go out with a bang. There are parties in abandoned houses. Canoe races down Main Street. The goal is to make the most of every minute they still have together.

And for Keeley, that means taking one last shot at the boy she’s loved forever.

There’s a weird sort of bravery that comes from knowing there’s nothing left to lose. You might do things you normally wouldn’t. Or say things you shouldn’t. The reward almost always outweighs the risk.

It’s the end of Aberdeen, but the beginning of Keeley’s first love story. It just might not turn out the way she thought. Because it’s not always clear what’s worth fighting for and what you should let become a memory.

I have just started this one, but I am loving it so far! The idea of having to evacuate my city because it flooded is just so intense and I can’t even imagine what it would be like. The writing in this book is absolutely beautiful, and I can already tell that this is going to be an incredible book.

Book Quotes: The Last Boy and Girl in the WOrld

“Things around us were changing, sure, but we were changing too, and we couldn’t pretend we weren’t any longer. Maybe that’s what happens when you’re suddenly living your life on a warp speed setting, trying to make the most of it before everything you know slides underneath the water.”

I have a hard time imaging having to leave your home because of a flood or other type of devastation. At least in this case it appears the town knows far enough in advance to at least be able to plan and people have time to pack what is most precious to them. Makes you start to think about what you’d take if you had to leave and not come back. As long as I had my furbabies (two incredibly spoiled cats!), I think I’d be ok!

This sounds like it will be a good one! I used to live in a flood plane and flooding was very common. I can’t imagine it getting as bad as it does in the novel though.

Great teaser! It strikes me as a bit of a bucket-list-type of story with deep insights about life thrown in. It sounds like an incredible read. Looking forward to hearing more about it.
