Review: Flower Moon by Gina Linko

REVIEW: FLOWER MOON BY GINA LINKO

Flower Moon by Gina Linko is one of those books that once you start reading, it is hard to set down. Fans of magical realism will really enjoy this story that combines elements of magic and coming of age. The carnival setting gives the narrative a perfect backdrop, and the science that is used to describe the strangeness happening between the sisters is one that contains wonderful jumping off points for the classroom.

Vassa in the Night by Sarah Porter

Vassa in the Night really surprised me. This is a magical realism story, but also a retelling of a Russian fairytale. The characters are very likeable (especially the talking doll) and the setting is so vividly described. I really enjoyed this one, even with no knowledge of Vassilissa the Beautiful.

Review: Another Day by David Levithan

Another Day is such a breathtaking book that everyone should grace their shelves with. It has a bit of an eerie concept, but mixed in with a contemporary, making this book an extremely believable magical realism book! One of my favourite things about this book is how it is told in Rhiannon’s perspective instead of A’s like in book one. This really makes Another Day a thrilling companion to Every Day.

Instructions for Dancing by Nicola Yoon

Instructions for Dancing by Nicola Yoon is the ballroom dance book I have been waiting for. With descriptions of dance and a little magical realism, this is a unique read with a lot of heart. The main character is also well-developed, and the philosophical questions throughout the story make for a thought-provoking read. Fans of Nicola Yoon will not be disappointed with this latest work.
