Welcome to this week’s edition of Friday Reads! Today I am sharing a few quotes from The Summer of Jordi Perez by Amy Spalding. This is a super fun book that is diverse and perfect for summer.
Book Beginnings is a book meme hosted by Rose City Reader where participants share quotes (the first sentence, or so) of the book, along with initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires.
The Friday 56 is hosted by Freda’s Voice, and the rules are quite simple: Grab a book, any book, and turn to page 56 or 56% in your e-reader. Find any non-spoilery sentence(s) and post.
THIS WEEK’S BOOK:

Author: Amy Spalding
Publisher: Sky Pony Press
Publication Date: April 3rd 2018
Goodreads
Seventeen, fashion-obsessed, and gay, Abby Ives has always been content playing the sidekick in other people's lives. While her friends and sister have plunged headfirst into the world of dating and romances, Abby's been happy to focus on her plus-size style blog and her dreams of taking the fashion industry by storm. When she lands a great internship at her favorite boutique, she's thrilled to take the first step toward her dream career. Then she falls for her fellow intern, Jordi Perez. Hard. And now she's competing against the girl she's kissing to win the coveted paid job at the end of the internship.
But really, nothing this summer is going as planned. She also unwittingly becomes friends with Jax, a lacrosseplaying bro-type who wants her help finding the best burger in Los Angeles, and she's struggling to prove to her mother--the city's celebrity health nut--that she's perfectly content with who she is.
Just as Abby starts to feel like she's no longer the sidekick in her own life, Jordi's photography surprisingly puts her in the spotlight. Instead of feeling like she's landed a starring role, Abby feels betrayed. Can Abby find a way to reconcile her positive yet private sense of self with the image others have of her?
THOUGHTS
I have just started reading this one and it is really wonderful so far. I really enjoyed Spalding’s other novel, The New Guy, so I have high hopes for this one. I am already loving the setting of Los Angeles, which is really spot on for the theme. It will be interesting to finding out how Jordi’s summer works out.
BOOK BEGINNING
In modern love stories, our heroines all seem to have something in common. No, not an adorably decorated apartment in the big city, a conveniently timed meet cute that arises two-thirds of the way through their personal narrative and somehow fixes itself in the last third.
FRIDAY 56
Trevor’s car pulls up, and I take a moment before I leave the house to let my face look as disappointed as I feel. Jax had asked me to hang out and eat burgers today, but I’d turned him down for one-on-one-time with Maliah.
Sounds like a good book. I am glad you are enjoying it. I hope it stays that way. Can’t wait to see your review. I haven’t seen this one so I have to add it to my TRB list.

It definitely has a unique concept! 🙂
This looks good. I like the 56. You can definitely feel the disappointment of the narrator there.

It has been a fun story to read so far! 🙂
I vaguely recall there being an issue with this author some time ago, although I’m not too sure. I find it hard to separate from the book from the author sometimes. D: But this one sounds like a fun read, so I hope you enjoy it!
