Friday Reads #15: The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares

Friday Reads

Book Beginnings is a book meme hosted by Rose City Reader where participants share the first sentence (or so) of the book, along with initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires.

The Friday 56 is hosted by Freda’s Voice, and the rules are quite simple: Grab a book, any book, and turn to page 56 or 56% in your e-reader. Find any non-spoilery sentence(s) and post.

This week’s book:

312232Summary (from Goodreads): Carmen got the jeans at a thrift shop. They didn’t look all that great: they were worn, dirty, and speckled with bleach. On the night before she and her friends part for the summer, Carmen decides to toss them. But Tibby says they’re great. She’d love to have them. Lena and Bridget also think they’re fabulous. Lena decides that they should all try them on. Whoever they fit best will get them. Nobody knows why, but the pants fit everyone perfectly. Even Carmen (who never thinks she looks good in anything) thinks she looks good in the pants. Over a few bags of cheese puffs, they decide to form a sisterhood and take the vow of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants . . . the next morning, they say good-bye. And then the journey of the pants — and the most memorable summer of their lives — begins.

I have just started this one on Audible and it is such a fun contemporary for summer! The characters are so interesting and I love the entire concept. I am looking forward to listening to some more of it while I am on holidays next week.

Book Beginning:

I found a clip from the beginning of the book on the PRH website to download. The narrator is perfect and if you are interested, you can give a listen as well.

Friday 56:

Suddenly she heard a crash, and she snapped her head around. In fascination she watched her entire pyramid of roll-on antiperspirants collapse under the weight of a falling girl. The falling girl didn’t catch herself, as Tibby expected, but dropped right to the ground, her head making a hollow thwonk on the linoleum.

This first book is definitely YA, but I think that as the series progresses the characters age. I think that I even saw something about a reunion, too. You might enjoy it if you have the time. 🙂
