How to Disappear by Sharon Huss Roat has a really intriguing concept. Social media has really become an easy way for people to hide behind a profile picture and suddenly gain popularity. This book sounds like it really explores the person behind some of these accounts and the importance of staying true to yourself. I can’t wait to find out how this story unfolds!

Summary (from Goodreads):

Vicky Decker has perfected the art of hiding in plain sight, quietly navigating the halls of her high school undetected except by her best (and only) friend, Jenna. But when Jenna moves away, Vicky’s isolation becomes unbearable.

So she decides to invent a social life by Photoshopping herself into other people’s pictures, posting them on Instagram under the screen name Vicurious. Instantly, she begins to get followers, so she adds herself to more photos from all over the world with all types of people. And as Vicurious’s online followers multiply, Vicky realizes she can make a whole life for herself without ever leaving her bedroom. But the more followers she finds online, the clearer it becomes that there are a lot of people out there who feel like her— #alone and #ignored in real life.

To help them, and herself, Vicky must find the courage to face her fear of being “seen,” because only then can she stop living vicariously and truly bring the magic of Vicurious to life.

In this beautiful and illuminating narrative, Sharon Huss Roat shines a light on our love of social media and how sometimes being the person you think you want to be isn’t as great as being the person you truly are.

This sounds like an amazing book! So many people are afraid of being seen and hide themselves in online profiles and social media. I hope this can inspire those people to move out of the shadows, and risk being seen and accepted for who they are. I’ll have to add this book to my TBR list.

    My WoW post.

This book sounds amazing. I can’t believe I haven’t heard of it before.
Thanks for introducing me to it, I hope we both love it when it comes out 🙂

This sounds like a really touching story, and so timely – I think it’s important to not take social media too seriously. We’re only getting a snippet of someone’s life, the parts they want to show, and like this story shows, it’s not even always true.

Exactly! It is so easy to invent a person that is someone completely different from who is posting. I think it is going to be a very interesting book. 🙂

This one interests me. I understand that need and desire to isolate yourself. The desire to want to stay undetected at all costs. And I also understand what it feels like to finally start wondering what it would be like to come out of the shadows and into the light, even just a little bit. So, I think I would like to read this, just to see…
