A prehistoric fantasy—with allusions to Pride and Prejudice.
Hunting, gathering, and keeping his family safe—that’s the life seventeen-year-old Kol knows. Then bold, enigmatic Mya arrives from the south with her family, and Kol is captivated. He wants her to like and trust him, but any hopes of impressing her are ruined when he makes a careless—and nearly grave—mistake. However, there’s something more to Mya’s cool disdain…a history wrought with loss that comes to light when another clan arrives. With them is Lo, an enemy from Mya’s past who Mya swears has ulterior motives.
As Kol gets to know Lo, tensions between Mya and Lo escalate until violence erupts. Faced with shattering losses, Kol is forced to question every person he’s trusted. One thing is for sure: this was a war that Mya or Lo—Kol doesn’t know which—had been planning all along.
Ivory and Bone is one of the most unique books I’ve read this year. This prehistoric book teaches the reader a lot about life during the ice age and contains a male main character who is very brave. The theme of family made me appreciate the book even more, and I would definitely recommend it.
Ivory and Bone
is probably the only YA prehistoric novel
I have ever read. Admittedly, it takes a bit of getting used to, but once you get into it, it is really incredible. I loved reading about the way the characters lived and how they had to hunt for their food and their clothes. I can’t imagine having to kill for my own survival, let alone in the freezing cold. I definitely admired the characters in the book for their strength.
Kol is such an amazing main character in Ivory and Bone! What I found really intriguing is the fact that Kol is a boy. Honestly, this isn’t too common in YA and it was really refreshing. Kol is strong and intelligent and actually makes his own honey, another characteristic that I really enjoyed. Main characters for me are the most important parts of the story, and I was very glad to be introduced to Kol.
One of my favourite aspects of Ivory and Bone
is the theme of family
. Kol and his family are a clan and they stick together and protect one another. I loved the fact that Kol’s siblings and parents actually have a role in the book, unlike many other novels out there. But not only is Kol’s entire family present, but Mya’s as well. I always prefer stories about family rather than romance, so I definitely enjoyed this one.
Ivory and Bone is an epic prehistoric novel with a strong, male main character. I really enjoyed the theme of family over romance. I would consider Ivory and Bone to be a must-read, as it is so unlike anything I’ve ever read before.
