DISCUSSION QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS:

A huge part of the story takes place on the sea. Do you love the ocean? Would you like to travel with the crew on the Jana? Or do you think you’d get seasick?

Unfortunately, I’m not cut out for sea travel. I actually get quite seasick when I travel on boats. This past summer, I took a ferry that traversed Lake Erie from Canada to the United States. It was a three hour trip, and I unfortunately spent most of the time green and feeling sick to my stomach.

From the boys we’ve met so far – Merik, Aeduan, Kullen, Leopold – who would you choose to be your book boyfriend? OR: From the girls we’ve met so far – Safiya, Iseult, Evrane, Ryber – who would you choose to be your book girlfriend?

So far in the book, I am enjoying Merik the most out of all the boys we have met. Although he seems to treat Safi cruelly, I think deep down, there is more to this behaviour than he wants to admit.

Did you imagine the sea foxes as described in the book? Do you think they’ll play a greater part later in the series?

Based on the drawing that Nicola provided us for the Sea Fox colouring contest back in the fall, I do imagine the sea foxes the way Susan portrayed them. Although, I don’t think they were silver in my mind. I don’t think that we have seen the last of the sea foxes.

What is your first impression of Nubrevna?

Nubrevna seems like a very sad place to live that was probably once very lush and full of life. I am interested in learning more about its history. Now that the characters are visiting Nubrevna at this point in the story, I think we will start to learn more about this land.

CHARACTER SPOTLIGHT: MERIK

“Whenever there were wrinkles, Merik had to smooth them out.” (p. 205) Do you think he succeeds in “smoothing the wrinkles out”? What do you think of his actions so far? Do you like Merik?

It does seem as though Merik always shows up at the right time to save the day. At this point in the story, I do think that Merik is a likeable character and he has quite a few redeeming qualities. I think he is very noble for his determination to help his fellow Nubrevnans, even though at times, his actions towards the women in his life are quite harsh.

I agree that Merik has redeeming qualities and think there’s more to his actions with Safi then we know. I wonder if he treats women a little harshly because of his relationship with his sister? Always being pitted against her and his anger towards her might come across when dealing with other women. I personally didn’t think he was too harsh with Safi, just maybe battling feelings he has for her? or maybe just treating her as he would any other sailor/fighter/equal? I don’t know there’s still a lot to discover about his character lol. Really enjoyed your answers to these questions!
