The Last Boy and Girl in the World by Siobhan Vivian has got to be up there as one of my favourite reads of the year. This book is believable and original and the main character is realistic and relatable. It is written so incredibly well that the characters really come to life. Everything about this book is just so enjoyable!

Summary (from Goodreads):

What if your town was sliding underwater and everyone was ordered to pack up and leave? How would you and your friends spend your last days together?

While the adults plan for the future, box up their possessions, and find new places to live, Keeley Hewitt and her friends decide to go out with a bang. There are parties in abandoned houses. Canoe races down Main Street. The goal is to make the most of every minute they still have together.

And for Keeley, that means taking one last shot at the boy she’s loved forever.

There’s a weird sort of bravery that comes from knowing there’s nothing left to lose. You might do things you normally wouldn’t. Or say things you shouldn’t. The reward almost always outweighs the risk.

Almost.

It’s the end of Aberdeen, but the beginning of Keeley’s first love story. It just might not turn out the way she thought. Because it’s not always clear what’s worth fighting for and what you should let become a memory.

Review: The Last Boy and Girl in the WOrld, Siobhan Vivian

❀ Based on Actual Events

The book has a concept unlike anything I’ve ever read. In The Last Boy and Girl in the World, a whole town is slowly sinking and the citizens have to evacuate. It is really interesting reading about the whole procedure and the resistance group trying to fight it. I can’t even imagine losing all my possessions and having to leave a town that I’ve spent my whole life in. The fact that the book is based on true events makes it that much more powerful.

❀ Relatable Main Character

The main character in The Last Boy and Girl in the World is actually very relatable. As she goes through the last days in her hometown, she makes many mistakes. Some of which can’t be easily undone. When it comes to main characters in contemporary novels, a lot of them are flawless, which makes the book a lot less believable. Of course, everyone makes mistakes, and I appreciated how Keeley is not perfect.

❀ Incredible Writing

There is such incredible writing in The Last Boy and Girl in the World. The whole book is filled with vivid descriptions of the state of the town and the response to the flooding. But what I absolutely adored about this book is the amount of character development. At the end of the book, the reader will have really gotten to know each and every character and actually start to feel things for them. Reading this book is an emotional adventure because you can connect so easily with everyone. This is definitely my favourite of Siobhan Vivian’s books.

❀ Realistic Book

The Last Boy and Girl in the World by Siobhan Vivian is a realistic book with a main character who is relatable and has her flaws. The writing is absolutely gorgeous and the characters are so well developed. I would definitely recommend this book to everyone, as it is the perfect book to curl up with on a rainy day.

Quotes: The Last Boy and Girl in the WOrld, Siobhan Vivian

“Things around us were changing, sure, but we were changing too, and we couldn’t pretend we weren’t any longer. Maybe that’s what happens when you’re suddenly living your life on a warp speed setting, trying to make the most of it before everything you know slides underneath the water.”

Thank you for this great review! I think I have read a book by this author, but right now I can’t remember the name of it… My memory sucks, ahah. I’m so glad you liked that book though, I’ve seen it around and I4’ve been wondering whether I’d like it or not. But relatable characters, great writing and character development? I think I should like it 🙂

  2. Jaime Lynn says:

Though this one sounds similar to other books, it sounds very different too. I can only imagine what this would feel like, to live through something like this. I am definitely looking forward to checking this one out.

  3. Elle says:

The premise sounds really interesting. I can imagine there are a lot of insights into life that one would learn when faced with that kind of situation.

  4. Criss Dimla says:

I haven’t read any of Siobhan Vivian’s books but this one caught my attention. In every book I read, I always love the flawed characters. You review is lovely! Thanks for sharing it!

This sounds great! I already had this on my TBR, but reading your review and hearing how much you loved it, has definitely sold me on this book even more. Plus, I love a unique concept, so that’s another plus in my book!

Wow, I just discovered your blog and after minutes of stalking (I’m not weird I promise), I love it so far! I haven’t even got to the end of this review and I already put the book in my to-read shelf in Goodreads. Thank you for this amazing review, your thoughts and opinions made me want to read it so bad!

Aww… nooo… ugghhh… *sigh.* (Stick with me, here.)
I’d already added this to my HUGE list of “Want To Read”s on goodreads, and after reading your lovely and heartfelt review I REALLY “Want To Read” it. As for my initial remarks (above)– that was really… more for me? It’s books like this that make me wish I could read a book from start to finish. Or, read a book in, um… less than a month… -ish. Flippin’ scatterbrained, always-moving AD(H)D. Yeah, I did do very well in college and grad school (alum of 5 U.S. schools here), but I am just.. can’t. And you’d think I would be able to work on this, seeing as how I was in Clinical Psychology! …But lolololol no.
    I digress. (And apologize.)
TL;DR: Beautiful review; makes me want to grab a copy RIGHT NOW. <3
