Summary (from Goodreads):

On a continent ruled by three empires, some are born with a “witchery,” a magical skill that sets them apart from others.

In the Witchlands, there are almost as many types of magic as there are ways to get in trouble—as two desperate young women know all too well.

Safiya is a Truthwitch, able to discern truth from lie. It’s a powerful magic that many would kill to have on their side, especially amongst the nobility to which Safi was born. So Safi must keep her gift hidden, lest she be used as a pawn in the struggle between empires.

Iseult, a Threadwitch, can see the invisible ties that bind and entangle the lives around her—but she cannot see the bonds that touch her own heart. Her unlikely friendship with Safi has taken her from life as an outcast into one of reckless adventure, where she is a cool, wary balance to Safi’s hotheaded impulsiveness.

Safi and Iseult just want to be free to live their own lives, but war is coming to the Witchlands. With the help of the cunning Prince Merik (a Windwitch and ship’s captain) and the hindrance of a Bloodwitch bent on revenge, the friends must fight emperors, princes, and mercenaries alike, who will stop at nothing to get their hands on a Truthwitch.

Review: Truthwitch by Susan Dennard

The first aspect that always draws me into a book or series are characters that I can relate to and ones that are respectable. Right from the first chapter of Susan Dennard’s Truthwitch, the reader is immersed in a humorous and exciting heist gone wrong. Immediately, the story sucks you in and keeps you engaged in what the main characters, Safi and Iseult, are up to. It is a book chock full of girl power and best friends that will do anything it takes to help one another.

❀ Female Empowered

One thing that sets this book apart from most other fantasy novels is the fact that the battles are often fought by women. Not only are we reading about fierce females who can stand up for themselves, we are also finding that they are skilled at self-defence. These are my favourite scenes in the book and it is very apparent that Susan Dennard is writing from personal experience, as she is quite an expert in martial arts herself.

❀ A Unique Fantasy Series

Truthwitch by Susan Dennard is an amazing start to the Witchlands series. The world is very loosely based on the Venetian, Ottoman, and Habsburg empires of Europe and each empire has it own sets of witches and magics. While this first book in the series just touches on a few, the idea of a Truthwitch who can discern truth from a lie and a Threadwitch who can sense the ties that bind living things together are so unique.

Olivia @ The Candid Cover:
I recently read on your blog that you lived in my home country, Canada. What can you tell us about your experiences in Canada?

Susan Dennard:
I
LOVED Canada! Oh my gosh, Canadians are the nicest people of all time. Seriously. And I was lucky to get to travel some while I was there–from Toronto to Ottawa to Montreal. (And Nunavut too for my research!) I didn’t get to go out west, though, so that’s on my travel-bucket-list still!! 😀

I love the first question/answer. As a long-time (though currently on hiatus) karate practitioner myself, I LOVE the fight scenes in Susan’s books. It’s probably partly because she comes from a karate background as well, but I can always picture the characters’ moves so clearly and the things they do make sense (no one’s punching from the shoulder in Truthwitch 😉 ).

  2. Geraldine @ Corralling Books says:

These questions are so awesome haha! 😀
I did learn self-defense once – but I kinda stopped bc I didn’t have any more time for it? But it;s definitely a great initiative! 🙂
I’d love to be a bloodwitch, just because everyone seems to fear them haha xD
And finallyyyy, that cleaving is actually really interesting to me too! Can’t wait for it to be explored more in later books 🙂

  3. Kim says:

If you have the chance, you should definitely take some classes in self-defense! It helps SO MUCH and makes you so much more confident. I think our answers are pretty similar :-). I’d love to be a threadwitch, as well, for the same reason and I can’t wait to get to know more about the mysterious cleaving :-)!!

  4. Megan says:

Looks like all Truthwitch lovers have to start a self-defense class. Too bad we live far apart, but I totally agree — everyone should be able to defend themselves.

Love your quote, by the way. 🙂

  5. Jaime Lynn says:

My copy of Truthwitch was supposed to be here this past week, but it still hasn’t arrived. Not happy about that. I can’t wait to get it so that I can join in on the discussion!

  6. Charlene @ Bookish Whimsy says:

Oh reading someone else’s comment above- how fun would it be to have a Truthwitch self-defense class. We could already go off that video from Sooz. 😀 But definitely every woman should know it. And love that quote – Safi has so much potential to realize in this series – I can’t wait for her and Iseult to save the world. 😀

  7. NicoleLynn says:

I totally agree that self-defense skills are something all women should have if only just to make us more badass 😉 I really enjoyed reading your responses! I’m also intrigued about the cleaving and how that will play into the novel going forward! Can’t wait for the DQ #2 tomorrow, so I’ll be back over here then! Thanks so much for sharing your answers and helping host this awesome read-along 🙂

  8. jacklinupde says:

I totally agree! I absolutely love reading books with female characters who kick ass! Same here, I can’t wait to learn more about cleaving. I’m loving Safiya as well. She is totally badass!
