Teaser Tuesdays #15

teaser tuesdays

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of A Daily Rhythm. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Today’s Teaser Tuesday:

Mechanica by Betsy Cornwell

Mechanica by Betsy Cornwell

Summary (from Goodreads): Nicolette’s awful stepsisters call her “Mechanica” to demean her, but the nickname fits: she learned to be an inventor at her mother’s knee. Her mom is gone now, though, and the Steps have turned her into a servant in her own home.

But on her sixteenth birthday, Nicolette discovers a secret workshop in the cellar and begins to dare to imagine a new life for herself. Could the mysterious books and tools hidden there—and the mechanical menagerie, led by a tiny metal horse named Jules—be the key to escaping her dreary existence? With a technological exposition and royal ball on the horizon, the timing might just be perfect for Nicolette to earn her freedom at last.

Gorgeous prose and themes of social justice and family shine in this richly imagined Cinderella retelling about an indomitable inventor who finds her prince . . . but realizes she doesn’t want a fairy tale happy ending after all.

Here is the teaser:

“I finished the book not long after supper; I’ve always been a quick reader. I crept back downstairs to the library, hoping to dig through Mother’s engineering tomes and find something I hadn’t yet devoured.”

If you have done a Teaser Tuesday yourself, leave a comment with your link and I will be sure to check it out. 🙂

Engineering is not my idea of great reading either, Beth, but the book appeals to me. I like a different twist and this sounds like it might be a good one.

I really like the sound of this one! Although I have read fairy-tale retellings over the years, I’m finding myself drawn to them more and more these days. I’ll add this one to my list of books to try.

I really like fairy-tale retellings, which honestly surprises me. Remade movies, television shows and music annoy me, but fairy-tales I’m fine with. Go figure lol. I’ll be watching for this one, thanks.
