Summary (from Goodreads):

Peyton, Sydney's charismatic older brother, has always been the star of the family, receiving the lion's share of t

heir parents' attention and—lately—concern. When Peyton's increasingly reckless behavior culminates in an accident, a drunk driving conviction, and a jail sentence, Sydney is cast adrift, searching for her place in the family and the world. When everyone else is so worried about Peyton, is she the only one concerned about the victim of the accident?

Enter the Chathams, a warm, chaotic family who run a pizza parlor, play bluegrass on weekends, and pitch in to care for their mother, who has multiple sclerosis. Here Sydney experiences unquestioning acceptance. And here she meets Mac, gentle, watchful, and protective, who makes Sydney feel seen, really seen, for the first time.

Review: Saint Anything by Sarah Dessen

❀ Family Theme

There are some really great themes in Saint Anything. This book is all about family, self-discovery and change. It is important to have themes like these in a book because many teens will be able to relate to the feeling of finding out who they truly are. Self-discovery is something that teens typically struggle with. Saint Anything describes this feeling perfectly in a way that is engaging and unique.

❀ Main Character Makes Good Choices

I really liked the main character, Sydney, in Saint Anything. Sydney has such a fresh voice that is interesting to read. For example, when she is about to receive a punishment, this is how the feeling is described: “We weren’t in a courtroom, and nobody asked me to rise. But I still knew a sentencing when I saw it.” One of my favourite characteristics that she possesses is her ability to make good choices. When a main character makes a horrible choice, most readers put the book down. Sydney knows just how to react to a situation and how to negotiate with her parents, which I loved.

❀ Pizza Parlour Setting

Another thing I really enjoyed about Saint Anything is how a lot of the book takes place in a pizza parlour. I loved learning about what it’s like to do pizza deliveries and why tipping the delivery person is very important. Pizza parlours aren’t very common settings in books, and I thought that including one in Saint Anything added an extra layer to the story that makes it fun and interesting to read.

❀ Will Leave You Satisfied

Saint Anything by Sarah Dessen is perfect for fans of YA romance books. This book will leave you satisfied, yet hungry for more. I can’t wait to find out what she writes next.

This just sounds like one of those feel good books that you read on a Sunday afternoon just to relax. One that makes you feel good about the world, life and your family. Sarah Dessen is so good at that. Love her books. Nice review.
