Review: The Queen of Bright and Shiny Things
The Queen of Bright and Shiny Things by Ann Aguirre is an interesting look at the everyday within the walls of your average high school. This book is so enjoyable and sweet. I absolutely loved it and the characters contained inside.
❀ Quick and Refreshing
The Queen of Bright and Shiny Things is a contemporary romance set in a typical high school, which makes the setting easy to relate to. This book tells the story of Sage and Shane, two high school students who have both experienced loss and foster homes. Together, the two become friends, fall in love and learn to cope with high school drama and bullies. The Queen of Bright and Shiny Things is such a refreshing read that goes by so quickly. I had a hard time putting this one down!
❀ Identifiable Characters
The characters in The Queen of Bright and Shiny Things are so identifiable. Ann Aguirre has created an amazing novel that depicts all of the different cliques that can be found in a school environment, such as the jocks, the “burners (the smokers)”, etc. I felt as though I knew these characters personally, as many readers will as well! The main character, Sage, has such a fresh voice that readers will grow to love. She is feisty and behaves in the way everyone wishes they were more like in social situations.
❀ Lots of Angst
Reading books that deal with teenage angst and high school drama are quickly picked up by Young Adult readers. The relatable setting and lovable characters will draw readers into this book with ease. I highly encourage fans of Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins to read this book!
